Kenyan Children for Environmental Change Project

A PROGRAM FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

HOW CAN KENYAN CHILDREN HELP IN ENSURING A SAFE AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT?

There is no doubt that our environment continues to suffer tremendous amount of degradation. Litter continues to pile up in our neighbourhoods, clog our drainage systems and pollute our rivers and lakes. While most adults have some degree of blame for this degradation, we often forget that children also have a role to play in ensuring a safe and healthy environment. With a population of over five million children in primary schools alone in Kenya, a significant amount of litter is also thrown every year by these children. This may be partly due to the fact that our schools are not offering our children with the kind of education they need to help them know the risks we are exposing ourselves by not taking care of the environment. Children by their very nature, if properly engaged, can play an instrumental part in a campaign of social awareness that can lead to better preservation of our environment.

THE KENYAN CHILDREN FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE PROJECT

CLEAN UP KENYA an environmental project established in 2015 and seeking to empower the dream of a litter-free Kenya is implementing as one of its flagship projects a cleanup awareness program for primary schools. The Kenyan Children for Environmental Change project hopes to reach 1 million children below 13 years within one year in Kenyan schools with an environmental awareness undertaking. We will be asking the children to pledge not to litter, organise and participate in environmental cleanup projects in their communities as part of a school project as well as raise awareness in their homes and neighbourhoods of the issues caused by litter. As part of their pledge, we intend to get a wristband on the hand of every child we meet with an environmental call to action. We are hoping to raise 30,000 USD for the project for 2015/16 and with your donation you can get a wristband on the hand of a Kenyan child and help bring about social change. Your contribution will help these children become environmental change champions who will help pursue the dream of a cleaner Kenya.

WHAT IS THE PUBLIC BENEFIT OF THIS PROJECT

To begin with, even if half of the children we reach catch the vision of a cleaner Kenya, and desist from littering, less trash will be seen in our neighbourhoods. These children can thus begin to experience a behavioural change that will drive them to be more responsible citizens when they grow up and take leadership roles in environmental preservation in the coming years. With over one thousand schools being reached in 2015 and dozens of school cleanup projects being achieved, our neighbourhoods will definitely have less trash.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

Betterman Simidi Musasia is an accomplished volunteer with continental experience spanning over ten years. As a young man, he served a full-time unpaid mission for his Church for two years developing a sense of community involvement. Since then he has helped communities and businesses plan successful community projects in the last three years in East Africa. He will lead the project. The country will be divided into several clusters with several Environmental Change Champions leading other volunteers to visit the schools. The teams will hold carefully planned environmental workshops for the kids. The kids will be given a motivation of why littering is bad, and asked to set up a Cleanup Environmental Club in their schools, they will then be asked to sign their names on a canvas as a pledge to Clean up Kenya. This pledge will be hanged in their schools. A framed Clean Up Kenya Petition will also be signed by their school heads and pinned in a prominent position in the school where the kids can look at and remember their pledge. The kids will then each be given a wristband.

Clean up Kenya will continue to follow up on progress of the schools to set up a Cleanup Environmental Club and offer technical support in planning of a cleanup activity by the children. Their projects can be registered, publicised and marketed to potential participants and partners on our website as well as through our Premium Rate Short Message Number and Social Media Platforms with potential participants being able to directly donate to these projects.
